The best way to describe Olhão is as a old fisherman town that was built just right on Ria Formosa shore.
Most of the locals used to work in the traditional fishing boats called “Traineiras” or in the industry of fish transformation into canned fish known as the “Conserva Portuguesa”.
Olhão has not been a huge touristic destination in the Algarve until recently and for that reason this town preserves a lot of it’s cultural background and provides you with the best typical food.

For you to trully experience the market you have to visit it during the morning hours while the sellers display the fresh fish and sea food that was catched that same day.
You can also find fresh meat, fruits, vegetables and other traditional delicacies from the local producers.
You don’t even need to buy any of those products because the experience to visit it, worth by itself.
The market is located right on the Marina and is surrounded by restaurants and cafes where you can spend a chilled time!
Ria Formosa Islands
Ria Formosa National Park is home to some barrier islands that are spread between the Ria and the Sea.
At Ilha da Deserta there is only one inhabitant and restaurant called “Estaminé” that is opened all year round. Being the only restaurant on this Island their prices are expected to be higher.
Ilha do Farol is the most populated Island and is located along side with Ilha da Culatra and Ilha da Armona and it is known for its lighthouse that lights the way so the boats can sail safetly during the night.
The locals that live there are mostly in fisherman houses, some restaurants and other facilities, in order to you to be able to spend the entire day or even more!
During Summer a lot of Tourists visit those islands to enjoy this peaceful paradise.
